Characters Make the Story

I’ll start off this month with a cool video from the family cabin in Frisco Colorado. This was caught on the security cameras, a huge moose and baby walking past. We’ll see if this comes over in the email when it’s sent. If not, you can find this and other wildlife videos and photos on the Wildlife section of the Fun Stuff Page on my website, along with other videos and photos for your enjoyment.

On my Bringing Life to Characters vodcast, towards the end of each episode I ask the author’s I’m interviewing their secret to bringing life to the characters in their books. The answers are fascinating to hear, providing me one of the great pleasures I have doing the show. There is no doubt in my mind, characters make the story. You can have the greatest and wildest plot twists, thrills and action. But if the characters don’t stand out and jump off the page, the books will not be compelling to the reader. Over the next several newsletters, I’ll highlight a few of the characters of my books. Protagonists, antagonists, and even a few of the secondary characters who’ve I’ve enjoyed bringing to life.

My first protagonist, is still one of my favorites and one I retired after Mann in the Crossfire, but couldn’t keep on the sidelines forever. The tough and snarky private eye, Jarvis Mann is still a joy for me to write. Flawed in many ways, the man reminds me of myself in certain aspects, especially when it comes to his sense of humor. Each of the 10 books (number 11 to be released later this year) written mostly in first person, which gives the story a personal touch. When I’m writing Jarvis, together we work the case, step by step, much the way a real investigator does, stumbling through the process along the way, until he gets the answers his client’s deserve. His personality shining through, along with the rough edges which often get him in trouble, with not only the villains he encounters, but the women in his life. He has evolved over time, from a ladies’ man who often fell victim to a women’s charms, to one who developed a faithful relationship, which in the end didn’t work out, leaving him single again. All real-life events many people deal with on a daily basis. I’ve always loved good private eye books, the classics being Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe, with my favorite being Robert B. Parker’s Spenser. Jarvis shares some of the traits of these private eyes, while at the same time being unique. He feels like a real flesh and blood person to me when I’m writing. I hope you feel the same.
